Laevo compared with spreadsheets and a signup site
Most pantries run on some version of this: a spreadsheet for neighbors, another for the shelf, and a signup site for shifts. It is free or nearly free, everyone understands it, and it will never change under you.
We are not going to pretend that is a bad choice. For a small pantry it is often the correct one, and a tool that makes you learn something new to do what you already do fine is not an improvement.
Where they are better than us
Free, already understood by everyone on your team, and it will never surprise you with a change. For a pantry serving a dozen families a month this is the right answer and we will say so.
Stay where you are if
- You serve a few dozen households a month and the reporting is an hour, not an evening.
- One person maintains it, that person is comfortable with it, and there is no succession problem.
- You have no external reporting obligations beyond a simple count.
Worth switching if
- Two people have edited the same sheet and you have two versions of the truth.
- Quarter end takes an evening of counting rows.
- Nothing warns you about anything — no expiry, no low stock, no volunteer reminders.
- The person who built it is the only one who understands it, and they are tired.
Side by side
| Spreadsheets and a signup site | Laevo | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $0–90 depending on tiers | $0–59 |
| Learning curve | None — everyone knows it | An hour |
| Two people at once | Fragile | Fine, on any number of devices |
| Warnings about expiry or low stock | None | On the screen you already use |
| Report drafting | You count it yourself | Drafted, with the working shown |
| Duplicate detection | None | Flags likely matches and asks you |
| Data ownership | Total — it is your file | Export in one click, whole |
Laevo's own prices on this page come from the same file the billing system reads, so they cannot drift out of date. Costs for Spreadsheets and a signup site are ranges reported by pantry operators rather than published starting prices. If you have a current quote that contradicts one of these, send it to us and we will change the number.
Our honest verdict
Under about fifty households a month, stay on the spreadsheet and spend the hour on something else. Above that, or with more than one person editing, the spreadsheet stops being free — it just moves the cost onto whoever does the counting.
